Coffee & Final Checks

In the last year, I’ve discussed various topics related to the process of tech editing knitting patterns. Unfortunately, I realized I haven’t touched on one of the last, but valuable, phases offered to all those whose patterns I tech edit. Let me introduce you to the Final Check!

Hello everyone!

This lovely October morning, I was able to enjoy a cup of coffee.

It kept me company while doing a Final Check for a lovely designer.

What’s a Final Check you may wonder?

Why do the Final Check?

After I do a thorough tech edit of a knitting pattern, the pattern isn’t usually published right away.

It’s often sent to test knitters to actually knit the pattern from start to finish.

Commonly, test knitters offer great advice for better wording and clarity, spot missing instructions that would help guide knitters better with the knitting their hands, and so much more.

Also, after test knitting is the time that some designers do the final sprucing up of their pattern. Adding photos of sample knits from the pattern, placing logos, and changing fonts of texts all to match their pattern writing style and beautify the pattern for publishing day.

Similar to the game of Telephone, a pattern that has been passed around and tweaked is prone to be changed in a way where things don’t add up correctly.

That’s what the Final Check is for!

Common Discoveries in the Final Check

The Final Check can reveal any of the following knitting pattern issues:

• Missing punction

• Incorrect instructions for a stitch in a key or abbreviation

• Inconsistency in wording (“stitches” or “sts”)

• Typos

• Stitch count errors

• And much more.

My Final Check Process

Since the Final Check is another step in assuring the pattern is ready for others to knit, I offer the Final Check as part of my tech editing service.

That means when you pay the invoice after completing the tech editing process, you still are entitled to the Final Check, free of extra charge, before you release your pattern into the world if you desire.

Releasing quality knitting patterns that you are confident in is important to me too!

Conclusion

The cup of coffee was finished and so was the Final Check for another fantastic pattern to be released for others to knit.

It’s exciting and an honor to get to help brilliant designers prepare knitting patterns for all who desire and will knit them!

Have a blessed day, friends! I will be back with more to share soon.
