I’m a sock knitter who used to have 2 pairs of handknit socks to wear.
As I found myself hunting for pairs of socks around my home, I decided it was time to knit myself a new pair, avoiding purchasing socks from a store like Target.
From a “desperate” situation while making this pair, I created a method for working a wedge toe on a 9-inch circular needle without markers more easily.
All the details are below.

Yarn: Fingering weight
- Retrosaria Mondim in color, 308
Pattern: Emmina Socks by The Kitchen Sink Shop
Needles: US 1.5 (2.5 mm) 9-inch circular needle
What I Enjoyed:
- Lace stitch pattern that was simple and intuitive to knit
- Ankle length
- Working on a 9-inch circular needle
Materials
After knitting my brother a pair of colorwork socks, I had enough of Retrosaria Mondim in color 308 to knit another pair.
As much as I love the natural, squishy qualities of Mondim yarn, I don’t knit socks with it too often. I often pick machine washable yarns for sock gift knitting.
Since this pair was for myself, I eagerly picked the remaining skein for this project.

Last year, I had enjoyed knitting socks from Garlene’s free pattern, Wish You Were Here.
Buying the Emmina Socks pattern gave me an opportunity to support her design work and have this simple, feminine sock pattern that I will likely knit numerous times.
Construction Details
I knit these socks cuff-down as specified in pattern.
Modifications
Besides the toe shaping “modification” below, any changes in my knitting from the pattern would likely be in the making of the second sock.
By the second sock, the stitch patterns and construction used were very intuitive, so I stopped looking at the pattern expect for stitch counts. Any modifications are unintentional mistakes.
It was enjoyable to relax a little more, not glancing at the pattern as much especially as I worked much on the second sock while traveling.
Other Notes
Toe Troubles & Solution
I knit on these socks during a time of many car trips as I moved from Virginia to Florida.
On route, I discovered I had not packed a single stitch marker to help me work the toe decreases.
I knew working on a 9-inch circular with no stitch markers or double pointed needles to divide the instep and sole stitches would be slightly tricky.
After doing a little math on a calculator and counting some stitches, I created a recipe for working a wedge toe when unable to be helped by stitch markers and extra needles.
Ankle Length
I highly recommend knitting the style of socks for yourself that you buy and wear.
I’ve always preferred ankle socks unless I’m hiking around my family’s brushy properties. I know this pair will be well worn!
Conclusion
I’m pleased with how the process of knitting a pair of Emmina Socks went. Also, the finished socks are just what I need for everyday wear!
Between completing such a lovely pair of socks and seeing other knitters’ beautiful socks for Summer Sock Camp 2024, I’m inspired me to cast on another pair.
Are you joining in on Summer Sock Camp 2024? What sock knitting pattern did you most recently enjoy knitting from?
